THEATER SUPERSTITION

"BREAK A LEG"

Not literally, Uncle Woody.

It is considered bad luck to wish someone good luck in a theater. In English-speaking countries, the expression "break a leg" replaces the phrase "good luck", which is considered unlucky.

The exact origin of this expression is unknown. One theory is that "Break A Leg" is a very old military term for "taking a knee", or bending down to one knee and breaking the line of the leg. In the theatre it is a reference to "taking a bow". To wish someone to "Break A Leg" is to ask them to give the best performance they are capable so that they may deserve to take a bow at performance end -- or, to "Break A Leg".

This expression has so entered the mainstream that it is used by non-actors toward actors and in non-theatrical situations, however, to say "break a leg" in ballet is considered just as much bad luck as saying "good luck", considering it's a physical art.

OVERVIEW

Since 2000, under the umbrella of Morphine Hearts Productions, Matthew LaChiusa has supported and produced local playwrights through a showcase held at Rust Belt Books. Some of these local playwrights and works included Scott Kurchak's My Life as an Ape, Anthony Cardinale's Dreamers in a Peanutbutter Factory, Tim McPeek's The Ditch, and Tim Hobin's Ubi Sunt.

In keeping with this traditional creative support, American Repertory Theater, is proud to be producing local playwrights through the Love the Art in You one-act showcase for local playwrights.

Alongside LaChiusa's original dark comedy, Angel in Black, ART will be presenting Artie Award winning playwright Mark Humphrey's newest one-act, Mechanics, three monologs written by Cindy Darling entitled Lucky Me, Goodbye Bucko & Chinese. Presented in the first two weeks, local actor/playwright/dramaturge Michael Votta's original, Dirty Laundry.

Cindy Darling's three monologs features Chinese, in which a younger woman comes to terms with herself in a good way... the boogie man of body image is always there, but we have moments of triumph, hopefully that stick with us. The second piece, Lucky Me, is pretty bitter... the idea that a former love has decided that one reason they're leaving you because 'it's best for you'... that monologue wallows a bit in the anger and the bitterness,  which sometimes, a person just has to do. The final monolog, Goodbye, Bucko, has a nice arc, from the totally out of control anger to the refinding of her sense of humor, to actually taking ownership of her half of the relationship... it's an awful lot happening in a very short time, but it works pretty well, showing the most growth of the three, and is the most hopeful for her future not being determined by other's behavior. The monologs showcase ART company member Alaina Renee Miller, who was last seen in ART's The Man Who Came to Dinner and in last season's The Rose Tattoo

Playwright Mark Humphrey with daughter Kathryn

In 1998, Mark Humphrey made his playwright debut with Times of Service, starring Timothy White and produced by BET. It won the 1998 Artvoice Artie Award for the "Best New Play". Times of Service ran in 1999 at Ujima Theatre Co. in conjunction with BET. In 2001, another show, Mr. Benny, opened at BET. A shorter version ran in 2002 at The Irish Classical Theater for their lunch time performance series. It was produced again at the Jewish Repertoire Theatre in 2006 and also at the Players Club in New York City. You may also see Mark out and about the Buffalo area playing percussion with local and, at times, celebrity musicians. If you see Mark and he doesn't say hello or recognize you it's possible you actually saw Mike, his twin brother, another man of many talents. You can look forward to other works by Mr. Humphrey including, Little Robert and A Visit from the Hometown, and Two Afternoons. Mark lives in Buffalo with his wife, Becky, son, Robert, and daughter Kathryn.
